recreational rides

After a hearty Craggy Hills breakfast, head out to Cobham Nature Reserve. Situated in the Southern  Maloti-Drakensberg Park, South Africa's first cultural and environmental World Heritage Site, it's a short 13km drive from Himeville. The exceptional natural beauty of the area is evident in the soaring basaltic buttresses, golden sandstone ramparts, rolling high altitude grasslands, steep-sided river valleys and rocky gorges. Our guided hikes and walks cater for all levels of fitness with plenty of opportunities to rest and admire the view. You may choose to take a refreshing dip in a cool mountain stream, or just enjoy a snack and a steaming mug of coffee at one of our scenic picnic sites and breathe in the beauty of the 'Berg.

Just hop on your bike and ride out the gate. Turn left or right, there is unlimited safe cycling in the area. Scenic tar road or some country gravel travel, whatever your preferance. If you aren't into the competitive side of cycling, enjoy nature, riding your bike with friends and drinking coffee, then this is for you! We have routes for all abilities and levels of fitness. Take the kids for lunch at the Stables, or the Stone House, an easy flat 5km beginner ride around the village. For longer rides, from 10km to 50km, we have more challenging routes, the choice is yours. Remember, this is the mountains, so life on the bike is not all downhill. The good part is that the Craggy Hills backup vehicle is always available to load your bike if the legs get tired. The best part ..... every ride is planned around drinking coffee!

bikepacking adventures

Explore new places on your bike and experience a bit of adventure along the way. Get away from the crowds of mass organized events and stage races. Relax and take the time to do things at your own pace. Slow down the hectic pace of life with an overnight, or multiday, bikepacking trip.... hit the open road! These trips are suited to the seasoned cyclist as an introduction to bicycle touring and are limited to a maximum of 4 riders. Beachbum Biker will guide you through route planning, navigation skills and gear choices. Overnight stops can be at b&b accommodation or camping. The rides are self-supported and you will have to carry all your own gear and food requirements. A moderate level of fitness is required. Your only limit is yourself... just do it!

Down the road is Kenmo Lake. Situated on a private farm and generously open to the public, this place is so beautiful and rich in colour that it feels like you've stepped into a painting. It's stunning all year round, but in Autumn especially, the subtle light and falling leaves are a photographer's dream. Enjoy a gentle walk through the trees followed by a sundowner and snacks while relaxing in the tranquility of this peaceful place.

Described as the mother of all South African mountain passes, Sani Pass is situated between Kwazulu Natal and Lesotho. Statistically it out distances, out climbs, and out performs all it's competitors to have become the most iconic gravel pass in South Africa. The pass is presently being prepared for tarring, with the initial stage taking the tar up to the SA border control point. Beyond the border post, it's a challenging drive in a 4x4, topping out at a summit altitude of 2876m above sea level. At the top Sani Mountain Lodge boasts Africa's highest pub and is well worth the trip. You can expect all the drama, scenery, bad weather and treacherous conditions of the high altitude 'Berg and we highly recommend that you utilize one of the experienced Sani Pass tour operators in the area.
